Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Security Committee seated in Abuja has placed a ban on protests in the Capital city of Nigeria over Corona virus safety fears.

The youths of Nigeria have been protesting nationwide for over a week for the disbandment of the now-defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) unit of the Nigeria Police Force, for alleged abuse of power, illegal extortion and brutalisation of citizens.

Although the government had earlier within the week dissolved the unit, protesters have refused to back down, expressing dissatisfaction with the government's measures.

In a statement released by the FCT administration on Thursday, October 15, 2020, stated that in a meeting held by the Security Committee on the Tuesday 13 concluded that the protests are in violation of safety rules and guidelines regulating social distancing and also displayed unruly behaviours, and caused inconveniences to resistends of the capital city.

The committee's meeting, presided over by FCT Minister, Muhammad Bello, resolved that the ongoing protests endanger the lives of everyone in the capital city.

"All street demonstrations, protests, and processions will not be allowed anywhere within the FCT," the statement read.

There've been reports of hoodlums attacking protesters in Lagos and Abuja injuring some and destroying properties.
